Informational sessions announced for 2011 Flinn Scholarship

The Flinn Scholars Program will host a series of informational meetings for Arizona high-school students from late March through early April. The sessions, in Tucson, Phoenix, Flagstaff, Tempe, and Yuma (all at 6:30 pm) will discuss the 2011 scholarship. Application available August, 2010.

Flinn Scholarship interviews scheduled for March

The application period for the 2010 Flinn Scholarship, one of the premier merit scholarships in the United States, is now closed. Flinn Finalist interviews will take place in March.

Class of 17 Flinn Scholars chooses Arizona universities

Seventeen of Arizona's highest-achieving high-school seniors have decided to attend one of the state's public universities on a Flinn Scholarship. The award includes funding for four years of study, academic-focused travel abroad, mentorship by top faculty, and other benefits. Altogether, the package is worth more than $50,000--on top of the cash value of tuition, provided by the student's chosen university.

Scholars pay annual visit to studio of John and Ruth Waddell

On May 2, a select group of Flinn Scholars spent a day working in the Cornville art studio of internationally acclaimed sculptor John Waddell and his wife, painter Ruth Waddell. A visit to the Waddells' studio has been an annual highlight of the Flinn Scholars program for nearly all of the past 24 years.

Flinn Foundation elects new president and CEO

Beginning in June, a new leader will guide the Flinn Foundation, including its signature Flinn Scholars program, which provides one of the most competitive and prestigious undergraduate merit scholarships in the United States. Jack B. Jewett, a senior university administrator, former president of the Arizona Board of Regents, and five-term member of the Arizona House of Representatives, will become the Foundation’s second President and CEO, succeeding John W. Murphy, who has led the Foundation since 1981.

The Phoenix Mars Mission, commanded from the University of Arizona, is guided by some of the world's foremost geochemists, robotics engineers, atmospheric scientists, science educators, hydrologists, and computer scientists. Scholar alum receives high honor for volunteer work

There's no denying that 2004 Flinn Scholar Dustin Cox is rather young to be receiving an award that usually recognizes a lifetime's dedication to volunteering, but there's also no denying that Cox has, at the age of 22, already given a lifetime's worth of service. He is being recognized for that work with one of the most prestigious honors an Arizonan can receive, the Hon Kachina Volunteer Award.

Special Feature: Eastern Europe travelogue 2008

Each summer the Flinn Scholars Program takes an entire class of Flinn Scholars to Budapest, Hungary, and neighboring Romania for a three-week seminar on the emerging democracies of Eastern Europe. Scholars meet leading political figures, learn about Hungarian and Romanian culture, journey to important historical sites, and live among locals. 23rd class of Flinn Scholars chooses Arizona universities

Twenty of Arizona's premier high-school seniors have chosen to pursue their college education at an Arizona public university on a Flinn Foundation Scholarship. The award provides four years of study, academic-focused travel abroad, personal mentorship by faculty members, and other benefits. The package is valued at approximately $50,000—on top of tuition and fee waivers from their chosen universities.

Scholar alum joins Flinn Foundation board

The Flinn Foundation has elected Shaun A. Kirkpatrick, president and CEO of Research Corporation Technologies (RCT), to its governing board. RCT is a Tucson-based technology investment and management company. Kirkpatrick becomes the first Flinn Foundation board member from outside Maricopa County and the first alumnus of the Flinn Scholars Program to serve on the board.

Globetrotting McGinnity wins Marshall Scholarship

Megan McGinnity, a 2003 Flinn Scholar, has won one of the world's most esteemed graduate fellowships, the Marshall Scholarship. Next fall she will begin studying Middle East politics at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, extending her investigation of foreign policy and security and how they are intertwined with human trafficking.

Scholars retreat moves from long-time home, begins new traditions


For 19 years in a row, the Flinn Scholars program began each year with a retreat at the Orme School, a Southwest landmark with multigenerational ties to the Flinn family. This year, the retreat moved to a new location, Lost Canyon, near Williams in northern Arizona's high country.

High-achieving Arizona high school seniors are encouraged to apply for the 2008 Flinn Scholarship, a four-year award to an Arizona public university valued at more than $50,000.
