Full Story:

Memorial services were held at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Phoenix on December 27 to honor the life of Andria Ligas, a 2000 Flinn Scholar. Andria's full life was cut short by a hit-and-run driver while bicycling in Tucson on December 22.

Andria was a junior majoring in interdisciplinary studies with a focus on linguistics and Spanish. She had graduated at the top of her class at Phoenix Country Day School.

In addition to excelling academically, Andria possessed a rare combination of artistic and athletic talent. She expressed her creativity through poetry, painting, drawing, journaling, and theatre. Her stunning sketches and insightful words helped to chronicle her class trip to Hungary and Romania in 2001 in the Flinn Scholars newsletter.

At UA, Andria was a voracious distance runner and member of Tri-Cats, the university's triathlon group. In 2001, she was the youngest competitor at the Tucson Toro Marathon, finishing first in her class and in the top 100 overall. In 2002, she ranked 33rd overall, qualifying her for the Boston Marathon, which she planned to run in April. Andria also loved rock climbing, having scaled many peaks throughout Arizona and at Yosemite, while developing strong friendships along the way.

We will remember Andria as a person whose varied interests connected a diverse set of communities across the state and the globe, a young woman unafraid of challenges (physical or academic) who lived life to its fullest. She is the only member of the Flinn Family to have passed away.
