Full Story:

Arizona State University recently named Robert E. Page as founding director of the School of Life Sciences, as well as Terree Wasley to the directorship of Technopolis.

SoLS was christened in July 2003 by combining the departments of Microbiology, Biology, and Plant Biology. Technopolis, housed in ASU's Office of Economic Affairs, works closely with SoLS to link scientists and entrepreneurs with the tech industry, providing networks and resources to gain access to public and private funds, as well as developing partnerships in the business community.

As former chairman and professor of the entomology department at University of California, Davis for the past 15 years, Page said that moving to SoLS provides him a wealth of exciting opportunities to influence the direction of the department in a rapidly-evolving university and a growing state.

"It's a chance to do something that is going to impact life sciences for a long time," Page said.

To the new school, Page brings a background rich in interdisciplinary research that incorporates physiology, behavioral science, neurobiology, and genetics. Over the course of his career, Page authored nearly 150 scholarly papers, won numerous research grants, and was named a fellow to the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1992.

Wasley echoed her new collaborator's enthusiasm, saying that the "strong foundation and following" Technopolis has garnered since its inception in fall 2003 provide her exciting future opportunities as director.

Like Page, Wasley is a veteran in her field: A former economic consultant in Washington, D.C., Wasley served five years as vice president of economic development at the Greater Phoenix Area Chamber of Commerce and recently directed the Arizona Venture Capital Conference.
