Full Story:

The Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index has ranked several University of Arizona programs among the best in the nation.

The index, which evaluates 354 institutions and more than 7,300 doctoral programs, is a new means of assessing doctoral programs at research universities.

UA's doctoral program in communication ranked first among large research universities, as did its agronomy and crop sciences doctoral program. The university ranked No. 1 in the broader category of agricultural sciences as well.

UA's entomology doctoral program ranked second in the nation based on faculty productivity.

The university's pharmaceutical sciences and medicinal chemistry program placed third, with and its botany and plant biology program ranking fourth. In addition, the nutrition doctoral program was ranked No. 10.

"It is my goal that we will be one of America's 10 best public research universities," said UA President Robert Shelton. "These measurements of scholarly productivity tell us that we are well on our way."

The Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index bases its rankings on book and journal articles published by university faculty, along with grants received, honors, awards, journal citations, and other variables. The index is created by Academic Analytics, a company partially owned by the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
