Hernandez lands Goldwater Scholarship

University of Arizona junior David Hernandez received the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for his undergraduate work in physics. One of only five Arizona students to receive the award this year, Hernandez is a mathematics, physics, and astronomy major.

University of Arizona junior David Hernandez ('04) has been awarded the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for his undergraduate work in physics.

Hernandez is one of only 317 students nationwide to be selected from a 1,110-student applicant pool. He is also one of only five Goldwater Scholars from Arizona. Goldwater Scholarships cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

Among his many scientific accomplishments, mathematics, physics, and astronomy major Hernandez has interned at the Institute for Nuclear Physics in Muenster, Germany, and coauthored a book on particle physics with UA professor Johann Rafelski.

Established in honor of Sen. Barry M. Goldwater, the Goldwater Scholarship works to foster and encourage outstanding undergraduate students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.

Hernandez plans to pursue a doctorate in theoretical astrophysics, focusing on the nature of dark matter.
