Regents voted earlier this month to allow University of Arizona officials to form a department of basic medical sciences for the College of Medicine Phoenix campus.

The department will be the main one for the program and include disciplines essential to the study of medicine, which are cell biology, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, pharmacology, and pathology.

It will also be the home department for the program's first cohort of 24 students, set to enroll in July 2007.
